Where to stay and what to savour this fall

By John Alberts

Smiling man in a black-and-white patterned button-down shirt standing outdoors in front of a large carved wooden tree.

Red, orange, and golden leaves burst into gorgeous colors in cities across America. Hot apple cider donuts and the scent of cinnamon, nutmeg and clove comfort our senses, along with the familiar embrace of a plaid long sleeve and blanket, resting on a hay bale along the pumpkin patch. Autumn offers exceptional travel circumstances; comfortable weather conditions, food festivals, and scenic drives with sweeping views of fall colors in their brightest glory. And accessible options abound in tourist hotspots like Stowe, Asheville, Aspen, Hudson Valley and even Orlando.

Man standing outside the Magic Kingdom train station between two giant decorative pumpkin scarecrows.

However, access needs vary and knowing if a destination is truly accessible calls for extensive research, but with knowledge as an experienced travel advisor, my research goes beyond the resort, extending to outdoor excursions that fit a variety of mobility differences, and dining experiences that cover vegan, vegetarian, gluten free and even low-inflammatory dietary restrictions.

So, grab your favorite fall sweater, clutch your pumpkin spice latte, and follow me through the beauty that is fall in the lower 48.
