Amy Tarpein is a published author, motivational speaker, disability mom, and avid traveler. The biggest thing she’s learned through her travels is the significance community plays in every part of her journey – and why it’s central to your journey, too.
When we first set out on our journey with Elijah’s Baby Bucket List Accessible Family Travel, I never envisioned the incredible community that would evolve from our experiences. Each destination brought unique adventures, and the connections we formed with fellow travelers and families have truly enriched our journey. The support, shared stories, and collective excitement as we cross off milestones together have made this endeavor so much more than just a list or a travel blog! It’s become a vibrant worldwide network of love, inspiration, and unforgettable memories that continue to grow every day.
In a world that sometimes feels disconnected, the importance of community stands out, especially in the realm of travel. For families like ours, who navigate complex medical situations while on the go, this support is invaluable. Whether we’re planning a family adventure or discovering new destinations, having a strong network transforms our experiences from challenging to genuinely enjoyable. We embrace the journey with confidence, knowing our community is there to uplift us.
Travel is community
Travel, at its core, is about connection—connecting with places, cultures, and most importantly, people. When you travel as part of a community, you open the door to shared experiences that enrich your journey and create lasting bonds. It’s about more than just visiting new locales; it’s about the stories you gather along the way and the people who become part of your story, sometimes even like family!
Recently, we were fortunate to immerse ourselves in the vibrant atmosphere of the National Ability Center, an adaptive recreation center that offers outdoor adventures for all abilities, where we shared an unforgettable week with remarkable families who were a lot like ours. It was truly inspiring to see the children form connections almost instantly, their laughter filling the air like beautiful music. The center felt like a sanctuary, radiating acceptance and inclusion from every corner. Surrounded by those who understood us, we cheered for one another, offering encouragement and support, weaving a tapestry of camaraderie that celebrated every unique journey.

Sharing is caring
For families like mine, who navigate the unique challenges of accessible travel, community plays a vital role. It provides a safety net of shared knowledge and support, where tips and experiences are exchanged, and encouragement is freely given. This sense of belonging can make all the difference in the world, turning the experience of traveling as a single mom with a medically complex child from a series of hurdles into an adventure filled with joy and discovery.
Sometimes, sharing my mistakes can be just as valuable as sharing my successes. By discussing what not to do, I can help others navigate their own challenges more easily. If my experiences can guide someone else and make their journey smoother, then I’ve made a positive difference.
In my book, Braver Together, I delve into the heart of these shared experiences. Our travels with Elijah, my son, who has a rare terminal brain malformation, are woven with moments of connection that have shaped our family. From the kindness of strangers who become friends to the fellow travelers who inspire us with their stories, our community has been our guiding light.
Our recent trip to the NAC gave us the rare opportunity to travel with our community. It was a perfect example of how community is about uplifting one another, sharing laughter and challenges, and creating memories that last long after the journey ends. You never know what inspiration can come from something as simple as a game of Go Gish! It’s about recognizing that we are never truly alone; there is always someone who understands, someone who has been through similar experiences, and someone who will walk alongside you.
As we continue to explore the world, we invite you to join us in celebrating the power of community. Whether this is through sharing your own stories, going on a collaborative adventure, or simply joining a facebook group to experience others cheering you on, let’s embrace the journey together. Because when we travel as a community, we discover that the world is not just a collection of places, but a tapestry of connections waiting to be woven into the fabric of our lives.
Here’s to the adventures that lie ahead, the communities that support us, and the stories that draw us closer. Let’s explore, grow, and thrive together.
