Wellness travel begins with feeling safe

When many people think about wellness travel, they immediately imagine yoga retreats, luxury spas, massages, meditation sessions or detox programs. While these experiences certainly have value, at IL VIAGGIO Travel we believe wellness is much broader than that.

For us, wellness begins the moment a traveller feels safe, understood and free from stress.

A truly wellness-focused journey is one where barriers are removed, dietary needs are respected, accessibility is considered, logistics are managed, and travelers can simply focus on enjoying the experience. Wellness is knowing that everything has been planned around your needs before you even arrive.

We often describe our approach as creating “stress-free, worry-free and hassle-free travel.” This is especially important for travellers with disabilities, chronic illnesses, sensory sensitivities, older adults, families and anyone who may require additional support.

Costa Rica naturally lends itself to wellness because of its extraordinary connection to nature. Wellness can be found in simple moments:

  • Breathing fresh rainforest air
  • Listening to birds in silence
  • Watching the stars while floating in natural hot springs
  • Practicing grounding beside a river
  • Meditating in front of a waterfall
  • Experiencing the ocean through adaptive surfing
  • Connecting with horses through equine-assisted activities
  • Walking through the forest and practicing forest bathing

These experiences often provide benefits that go beyond recreation. They create opportunities for reflection, emotional well-being, confidence, connection and personal growth.

At IL VIAGGIO Travel, every itinerary is designed around the traveller. We spend significant time understanding the person before recommending experiences. We ask questions about mobility, fatigue levels, sensory preferences, dietary restrictions, health conditions, interests and travel goals.

The traveller becomes the center of the experience.

This personalized approach allows people to move at their own pace, take breaks when needed, sleep, disconnect from technology, spend time in quiet spaces and enjoy Costa Rica in a way that feels comfortable and restorative.

I often say that all of our trips are wellness trips.

Whether someone is travelling with a physical disability, autism, Down syndrome, sensory sensitivities, chronic illness, or simply seeking a meaningful escape from daily life, travel has the power to improve well-being. It helps people reconnect with themselves, discover new possibilities, gain confidence and experience joy.

Travel is ultimately a human tool created for human beings. It allows us to learn, connect, explore, rest and grow. Every person, regardless of ability or condition, deserves access to those opportunities.

Costa Rica’s “Pura Vida” philosophy aligns naturally with this vision. It invites travelers to slow down, breathe, feel, connect with nature and focus on what truly matters.

For us, accessible wellness is not a separate type of tourism. It is simply tourism designed around people.
